Former Courageous Class member Loic Mabanza takes us on a heartwarming trip to Malawi.
Loic Mabanza is a French professional dancer, choreographer, actor, filmmaker, and fashion model who was featured in our Fall 2017 campaign. On a recent trip to Lilongwe, Malawi with Madonna’s organization, Raising Malawi, Loic visited two orphanages, Home of Hope and SOS Children, as well as the hospital Madonna funded–the first pediatric hospital in Malawi. The purpose of the trip? To inspire and motivate. Before leaving for Malawi, Loic partnered with Kennneth Cole to create T-shirts that would encourage these kids to use their voices. After the words “I AM”, which are emblazoned on the T-shirts, a blank line was meant to make these kids think about their futures in a positive way. The kids filled in their t-shirts with words like, DOCTOR, MINISTER OF EDUCATION, SOCCER PLAYER, SINGER, DESIGNER, AND DANCER.
“You are the beginning of the new generation, you are the people that are going to make change.”
“What you can be is already inside of you,” Loic told the kids. “Don’t just write on your t-shirts what you want to be. When you wear it, act like it,” he continued. His words deeply affected the children, who through this simple exercise, felt like they could change their lives and make a difference.
“I told the kids, don’t just write down what you want to be. When you wear it, act like it. They felt free, and like they could be/do anything.”
