On a Monday afternoon, Supermodel and Courageous Class alum member Mari Malek, also known as DJ Stiletto, headed into the East Side headquarters of the United Nations to participate in a panel with Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGLive). The purpose of this panel? To discuss innovative projects in cities around the world that focus on improving society.
As a refugee, Malek brought her own unique story to the conversation. “We faced genocide...we were forced to flee the country. My mother–the courageous one–helped us escape.” She believes more should be done for refugees to assure they are given equal opportunities and respect, also shattering any misconceptions that they are lazy or criminals.
Malek also called for more investment in and opportunities for the youth. “Some young people may not be able to come to the UN, but how do we get them to see it and be a part of the movement? Spread awareness.”
Malek has made it her life’s mission to act courageously and be an accessory for change. She’s not just a model, but a role model for youth and adults everywhere.
