Recovering With Love

When the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in January of 2010, calls for help went out and instantly people across the globe opened up their hearts and wallets. Despite good intentions, much of the global attention on Haiti dissipated. Yet the Haitian people are still in desperate need. Today, the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti, which began its work in 2001, remains one of the hardest working groups still trying to address the enormous challenges in Haiti.

THE FOUNDATION FOCUSES ITS EFFORTS ON HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, JOB CREATION, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

MOST OF THEIR WORK IS IN THE MOST REMOTE AREAS WHERE OTHERS HAVE NEVER DARED TO GO.

They run two hospitals (which have served over 40,000 cholera patients), two clinics (including the Kenneth Cole Haiti Health Center), thirty schools, and a plant where they make products ranging from peanut butter to concrete that help create jobs and increase production in Haiti.

“THERE IS A LOT OF GOOD WORK BEING DONE AND MOST OF IT IS BEING DONE BY HAITIAN PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS.”

“Most of the narrative now is about a lack of progress and where the money is going.” says Wynn Walent the Assistant National Director at NPH, the umbrella organization for The Foundation.

It is important that the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti is 100% Haitian-run. Decisions are always made by Haitians with a focus on what best serves the community and the people of Haiti. Wynn adds: “We’re not perfect, we have a ton of problems, but our work shows that if resources are put in the hands of Haitian people, and if long sustained partnerships are put in place, and if people work humbly, a lot can happen.” He points to the success of the St. Luke Hospital, which began as an overflow hospital in a field in the earthquake’s aftermath. Over time, it has grown into a real hospital. Today, institutions like the Mayo Clinic sends visiting fellows there and it stands proudly as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country.
