THE COURAGEOUS CLASS Q&A: MARI MALEKShare
What message do you want to share with the world?
My message has always been this: Use your platform; don’t let your platform use you! We all have a purpose, so let’s find our purpose, do something meaningful, and have fun with it. That’s what life is all about.
How do you LOOK GOOD, FOR GOOD?
I look good and feel good by staying true to myself. Looking good comes from the depths of your soul. In other words, look within you.
What people and/or events inspired you to do the work that you do today?
I am a refugee from South Sudan. Many of us were displaced due to war and came to the United States and other countries as refugees. Our country is now independent as of July 9th, 2011, but today, we are still fighting for our basic human rights. Over 50% of the population in my country are children, and we face one of the worst literacy rates in the world. My existence now reminds me of why I do the work that I do. I have a purpose to speak on behalf of the many refugees all over the world, especially for the children who inspire me so much.
What is some advice you have for people trying courageously to change the world?
My advice is don’t try. Just do it! We all have the power to make a positive change, even if it is a small change. All we have to do is make the choice to use our power.
What are ways that others can get involved with your community?
I have a non-profit called “Stand for Education.” We are dedicated to providing access to education for underprivileged children with a special focus on girls. Currently we are working in South Sudan and seeking aid for basic school supplies and materials for “Malek Primary School.” You can help us by donating, volunteering, and hosting an event for us, or by just spreading the word.
