TRUST ME, I’M A NEW YORKER: Ben Fink Shapiro

Taking a moment to ask real New Yorkers real New York questions.

Ben Fink Shapiro, NYC-based Fashion, Portrait & Fine Art Photographer

Taxi or Uber?

Uber, Via, and the MTA!

NY Times or NY Post?

NY Times. I would be ex-communicated from my family if I didn’t read the NY Times.

Central Park or Hudson Park?

Sheep Meadow all the way. Sunday mornings in spring and summer when I’m in town, I play softball in Central Park with a bunchof guys 30-75 years old. It’s a lot of fun.

Would you rather a walk-in closet or outdoor space?

Outdoor space. But if I could get a walk-in closet with a balcony that would awesome.

Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

I’ve actually still never been to a Trader Joe’s.

Starbucks or bodega coffee?

I rarely drink caffeine, but if I do: English Breakfast Tea.

The Hamptons or Upstate?

I have a house in East Hampton, but I also love hiking/antiquing Upstate.

Tap or bottled water?

NYC has some of the best drinking water in the world, hands down — and bottoms up!

Street meat or a slice?

Prince Street Pizza every time.

Would you rather Standard Bingo or a Rose Bar Session?

Bingo night at Tortilla Flats!

Pedicure or massage?

My feet are too ticklish for a pedicure. Swedish or Thai massage please.

First snow or first spring day?

Spring for sure. I’m an April baby.

More magical: The streets at dusk or the streets at dawn?

Photographically speaking, the streets at dawn. But this photographer is not usually there to witness the magic — unless of course I have an early call time.

More iconic: The Empire State Building or The Chrysler?

The Chrysler — love those Deco details

For modern art: The MoMA or The Whitney?

I like the architecture and terraces of the new Whitney downtown, but prefer MoMA’s collection.

Brooklyn Bridge or Williamsburg Bridge?

Williamsburg Bridge. Got some memories there.

Boozy brunch or late-night dinner?

Late-night dinner all the way. Have yet to understand the appeal of day drinking.

Scarier thought: A falling air conditioner or falling into an open sidewalk cellar?

Falling AC unit as I can’t control that. If I fell into an open sidewalk cellar, I have nobody to blame but myself!

More likely to people watch or dog watch?

People watch. I guess that’s part of why I became a photographer.

Dream home: luxury high-rise or brownstone?

I’d like to have outdoor space in the city — maybe a brownstone with a nice garden and a grill in the back.
