This ad was in response to the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy that was introduced in December 1993. The policy prohibited discrimination against "closeted" homosexual or bisexual people serving in the military, but it barred "openly" gay, lesbian, or bisexual people from military service. The policy was eradicated in September 2011.
